| Research indicates that postpartum care is a critical factor in increasing the frequency and duration of breastfeeding, and that it plays a role in decreasing postpartum depression and often reduces the incidence of child abuse. Training covers the doula's role and the scope of postpartum care: participants learn skills to help a new family with infant and mother care, postpartum comfort measures, and breastfeeding support. |
| Joan Goode and Dorothy Harrison run successful postpartum doula services and have been training postpartum doulas since 1994. They have one of the first training programs in the country. |
